How we calculate it
"Add tax" multiplies the amount by each tax for the province you pick: HST in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, GST plus PST, RST or QST in BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec, and GST only in Alberta and the territories. "Remove tax" divides the total by one plus the combined rate. 2026 rates, rounded to the cent.
Common questions
What is the PST rate in Saskatchewan?
6%, charged on the price before tax alongside the 5% federal GST, for 11% combined. It rose from 5% to 6% in 2017 and has stayed there since; the PST is filed with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Finance and the GST with the CRA.
Does Saskatchewan PST apply to services?
More than in most provinces. Since 2017 PST applies to restaurant meals, construction and contractor labour, insurance premiums and many personal and professional services as well as goods. Basic groceries, prescription drugs and some medical items stay exempt. Check the province's PST bulletins for your sector before quoting.
Do I need a Saskatchewan PST number?
Any business selling taxable goods or services in Saskatchewan generally needs a PST vendor's licence from the start; there is no $30,000 small-supplier threshold for PST the way there is for GST. Out-of-province and online sellers shipping into Saskatchewan are expected to register as well.
What is the HST rate in Ontario?
Ontario charges 13% HST on most goods and services. That is the 5% federal part plus an 8% provincial part collected together by the Canada Revenue Agency.
How do I calculate HST backwards from a total?
Divide the tax-included total by 1.13 in Ontario (or 1 plus the combined rate for your province) to get the price before tax, then subtract to find the tax. For example $113.00 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00 before tax and $13.00 HST. The "Remove tax" mode above does this for you.
Which provinces charge HST and which charge GST plus PST?
HST provinces: Ontario 13%, New Brunswick 15%, Newfoundland and Labrador 15%, Nova Scotia 14% and Prince Edward Island 15%. GST plus a provincial tax: British Columbia 5% + 7% PST, Manitoba 5% + 7% RST, Saskatchewan 5% + 6% PST and Quebec 5% + 9.975% QST. Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge 5% GST only. The federal list is on the CRA website.
Did the Nova Scotia HST rate change?
Yes. Nova Scotia cut its provincial portion from 10% to 9% on April 1, 2025, so the HST there went from 15% to 14%. Invoices dated before that use 15%; this calculator uses the current 14%.
Do I have to charge HST as a small business in Canada?
Generally you must register for GST/HST once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters; below that you are a "small supplier" and registration is optional. Once registered you charge the rate for the province where the sale takes place. Confirm the details with the CRA or an accountant.
Is this calculator free, and do you keep my numbers?
Yes, it is free. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored. The only thing that leaves the page is the message you choose to send us on WhatsApp.
