How we calculate it
"Add tax" multiplies the amount by each tax for the province you pick: HST in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, GST plus PST, RST or QST in BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec, and GST only in Alberta and the territories. "Remove tax" divides the total by one plus the combined rate. 2026 rates, rounded to the cent.
Common questions
What is the difference between RST and PST in Manitoba?
Nothing in practice: RST (retail sales tax) is simply Manitoba's name for its provincial sales tax. It has been 7% since July 1, 2019, when it dropped from 8%, and it is filed with Manitoba Finance separately from the federal GST.
What does Manitoba RST apply to?
Most goods, plus a range of services such as telecom, accommodation, repairs and some professional services. Basic groceries, prescription drugs, children's clothing and footwear and books are among the exemptions, and since 2020 personal services like haircuts are no longer taxed. Manitoba Finance publishes a bulletin for each sector.
When do I need to register for Manitoba RST?
Manitoba has its own small-business rule: if your annual taxable sales in the province are under $10,000 you are generally not required to register for RST, separate from the federal $30,000 GST threshold. Once you pass it you need an RST number as well as a GST number, and out-of-province sellers shipping into Manitoba may have to register too.
What is the HST rate in Ontario?
Ontario charges 13% HST on most goods and services. That is the 5% federal part plus an 8% provincial part collected together by the Canada Revenue Agency.
How do I calculate HST backwards from a total?
Divide the tax-included total by 1.13 in Ontario (or 1 plus the combined rate for your province) to get the price before tax, then subtract to find the tax. For example $113.00 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00 before tax and $13.00 HST. The "Remove tax" mode above does this for you.
Which provinces charge HST and which charge GST plus PST?
HST provinces: Ontario 13%, New Brunswick 15%, Newfoundland and Labrador 15%, Nova Scotia 14% and Prince Edward Island 15%. GST plus a provincial tax: British Columbia 5% + 7% PST, Manitoba 5% + 7% RST, Saskatchewan 5% + 6% PST and Quebec 5% + 9.975% QST. Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge 5% GST only. The federal list is on the CRA website.
Did the Nova Scotia HST rate change?
Yes. Nova Scotia cut its provincial portion from 10% to 9% on April 1, 2025, so the HST there went from 15% to 14%. Invoices dated before that use 15%; this calculator uses the current 14%.
Do I have to charge HST as a small business in Canada?
Generally you must register for GST/HST once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters; below that you are a "small supplier" and registration is optional. Once registered you charge the rate for the province where the sale takes place. Confirm the details with the CRA or an accountant.
Is this calculator free, and do you keep my numbers?
Yes, it is free. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored. The only thing that leaves the page is the message you choose to send us on WhatsApp.
