How we calculate it
"Add tax" multiplies the amount by each tax for the province you pick: HST in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, GST plus PST, RST or QST in BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec, and GST only in Alberta and the territories. "Remove tax" divides the total by one plus the combined rate. 2026 rates, rounded to the cent.
Common questions
Why does BC charge GST and PST separately instead of HST?
British Columbia went back to separate taxes in 2013 after a referendum. The 5% GST is federal and goes to the CRA; the 7% PST is provincial and is filed with the BC Ministry of Finance under a separate PST number. Both are worked out on the price before tax, so $100 becomes $112, never tax on tax.
What is exempt from PST in British Columbia?
PST mostly applies to goods, software, telecom and a few services such as legal services and accommodation. Basic groceries, restaurant meals, children's clothing, books, bicycles and most services (haircuts, consulting, repairs to buildings) are PST-exempt, though GST may still apply. Liquor carries 10% PST and accommodation 8%, so this calculator's 7% is the general rate for goods only.
Do I need to register for BC PST as a small business?
The federal GST threshold is $30,000, but BC has its own rule: a business located in BC with under $10,000 a year in taxable sales may qualify as a small seller and skip PST registration. Out-of-province sellers shipping goods or software into BC can also be required to register once they pass BC's thresholds, so check the province's PST bulletins.
What is the HST rate in Ontario?
Ontario charges 13% HST on most goods and services. That is the 5% federal part plus an 8% provincial part collected together by the Canada Revenue Agency.
How do I calculate HST backwards from a total?
Divide the tax-included total by 1.13 in Ontario (or 1 plus the combined rate for your province) to get the price before tax, then subtract to find the tax. For example $113.00 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00 before tax and $13.00 HST. The "Remove tax" mode above does this for you.
Which provinces charge HST and which charge GST plus PST?
HST provinces: Ontario 13%, New Brunswick 15%, Newfoundland and Labrador 15%, Nova Scotia 14% and Prince Edward Island 15%. GST plus a provincial tax: British Columbia 5% + 7% PST, Manitoba 5% + 7% RST, Saskatchewan 5% + 6% PST and Quebec 5% + 9.975% QST. Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge 5% GST only. The federal list is on the CRA website.
Did the Nova Scotia HST rate change?
Yes. Nova Scotia cut its provincial portion from 10% to 9% on April 1, 2025, so the HST there went from 15% to 14%. Invoices dated before that use 15%; this calculator uses the current 14%.
Do I have to charge HST as a small business in Canada?
Generally you must register for GST/HST once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters; below that you are a "small supplier" and registration is optional. Once registered you charge the rate for the province where the sale takes place. Confirm the details with the CRA or an accountant.
Is this calculator free, and do you keep my numbers?
Yes, it is free. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored. The only thing that leaves the page is the message you choose to send us on WhatsApp.
