How we calculate it
"Add tax" multiplies the amount by each tax for the province you pick: HST in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, GST plus PST, RST or QST in BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec, and GST only in Alberta and the territories. "Remove tax" divides the total by one plus the combined rate. 2026 rates, rounded to the cent.
Common questions
Why is the QST rate 9.975% and not 10%?
Until 2013 the QST was 9.5% charged on top of the GST, tax on tax. Quebec then switched to charging QST on the pre-tax price and set the rate at 9.975% so the total stayed the same. Both taxes are now worked out on the price before tax: $100 becomes $114.98.
Who do I register with for GST and QST in Quebec?
Revenu Québec administers both: you register for GST and QST together and file one combined return with them, not the CRA. The $30,000 small-supplier threshold applies to each tax, and most businesses that pass it register for both at the same time.
What is zero-rated or exempt from QST?
Basic groceries, prescription drugs and most medical and child-care services carry no GST or QST, the same as the rest of Canada. Printed books are zero-rated for QST only, so they show 5% GST and no QST on a Quebec receipt. Check Revenu Québec's lists before you set up invoicing.
What is the HST rate in Ontario?
Ontario charges 13% HST on most goods and services. That is the 5% federal part plus an 8% provincial part collected together by the Canada Revenue Agency.
How do I calculate HST backwards from a total?
Divide the tax-included total by 1.13 in Ontario (or 1 plus the combined rate for your province) to get the price before tax, then subtract to find the tax. For example $113.00 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00 before tax and $13.00 HST. The "Remove tax" mode above does this for you.
Which provinces charge HST and which charge GST plus PST?
HST provinces: Ontario 13%, New Brunswick 15%, Newfoundland and Labrador 15%, Nova Scotia 14% and Prince Edward Island 15%. GST plus a provincial tax: British Columbia 5% + 7% PST, Manitoba 5% + 7% RST, Saskatchewan 5% + 6% PST and Quebec 5% + 9.975% QST. Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge 5% GST only. The federal list is on the CRA website.
Did the Nova Scotia HST rate change?
Yes. Nova Scotia cut its provincial portion from 10% to 9% on April 1, 2025, so the HST there went from 15% to 14%. Invoices dated before that use 15%; this calculator uses the current 14%.
Do I have to charge HST as a small business in Canada?
Generally you must register for GST/HST once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters; below that you are a "small supplier" and registration is optional. Once registered you charge the rate for the province where the sale takes place. Confirm the details with the CRA or an accountant.
Is this calculator free, and do you keep my numbers?
Yes, it is free. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored. The only thing that leaves the page is the message you choose to send us on WhatsApp.
